Most brides opt for a simple robe on their wedding morning, but we took a different approach. When my bride brought me her mother’s 1980s wedding gown—complete with puffy sleeves, lace, and a full train—we saw the opportunity to create something truly special. By flipping the Basque waist upside down into a fitted underbust corset, adding dramatic lantern sleeves, and reshaping the skirt for a flowing, vintage-inspired silhouette, we transformed the dress into a Hollywood glam dressing gown worthy of the big day. Now on display in my February storefront window, this stunning piece is framed by vintage Valentine’s cards and wedding morning photos, celebrating both nostalgia and modern bridal elegance. Who wouldn’t want to start their wedding day wrapped in this level of glamour?

Preliminary Furnishing: Phase One

Now that I’ve filled you in on how our house came to be our house, I wanted to share my favorite part of the process so far!

Of course, we had to sort out some gruesome plumbing issues and dispose of about 900 spider carcasses. You can imagine, while necessary, these items weren’t my favorite on the agenda.

As soon as we got the green light from the floor guy to come inside the house, I started making the empty shell a home that would reflect our styles and tastes. I made a list of what each room needed and started on Operation Acquisition for the more important items.

Our Forties Fixer-Upper

Let me preface this by saying buying a house was nowhere on our radar for 2022.

Now that I have that out of the way, I can tell you that driving to Sweet Home on that fateful September day to look at a house was more of a “fun outing” that we wanted to take with my visiting grandparents to keep them busy before their event that afternoon. If you know my grandparents, you know keeping them busy is essential if you want to keep their 80-year-old bodies from deciding to build a barn or run a “quick” errand to pick up an antique tractor 100 miles away “on their way” to said such events.
